Using Pipe Text in Questions

Using Pipe Text in Questions

Pipe Text

Overview

Pipe Text allows users to dynamically insert data into survey questions while building surveys. Instead of manually typing repetitive information, users can pull values directly from previously answered survey questions, contact properties, or survey metadata.

This helps create more personalized and contextual survey experiences for respondents.

For example, if a respondent previously entered their product name, city, or service type, that value can automatically appear in later questions using Pipe Text.

Pipe Text can be used with:

  • Previous Survey Questions
  • Contact Properties
  • Survey Metadata

When inserted, Pipe Text appears directly inside the question text as a dynamic value placeholder.

When to use it:
Use Pipe Text when you want to personalize survey questions, reuse earlier responses, or dynamically display respondent-specific information.

IdeaUse Pipe Text in follow-up questions to create more conversational and personalized surveys.

Key Use Cases

  • Personalize survey questions dynamically
  • Reuse answers from previous questions
  • Insert contact information into surveys
  • Display metadata-based contextual information
  • Create conversational survey experiences

Available sources include:

  • Survey Questions
  • Contact Properties

  2. Select Survey Question
  3. Choose the required previously asked question

The selected response appears as a dynamic placeholder inside the question.

  • “[Previous Answer]” automatically fills based on respondent input.
NotesOnly previously asked survey questions can be used as Pipe Text sources.

Users can insert saved contact information into survey questions using Contact Properties.

To use Contact Properties:

  • Campaign Name
  • Service Type
  • Location

Metadata values are dynamically populated based on the survey distribution setup.

How Pipe Text Appears in Questions

Once inserted, Pipe Text appears inside the question editor as a highlighted dynamic field placeholder.

During survey response collection, respondents see the actual value instead of the placeholder token.

This helps create more personalized and natural survey interactions.

Editing or Removing Pipe Text

Pipe Text placeholders can be edited or removed directly from the question editor.

Users can:

  • Remove a placeholder using the close (×) option
  • Replace it with another Pipe Text value
  • Continue editing the surrounding question text normally

Best Practices for Using Pipe Text

To create better respondent experiences:

  • Use Pipe Text only when relevant to the question context
  • Prefer short and meaningful dynamic values
  • Ensure referenced questions appear earlier in the survey
  • Use Contact Properties and Metadata for personalization without increasing survey length

Warning
If the selected Pipe Text source does not contain a value, the question may appear incomplete during survey response collection.
