Theme Logic

Theme Logic

Overview

Theme Logic allows you to show different survey themes based on predefined conditions. This helps you personalize the visual experience for different respondents using their survey responses, metadata, or contact properties.

Theme Logic is available under Appearance in the Survey Builder.

Idea
Use Theme Logic when different respondent groups need to see different branding, colors, or visual styles.

Key Use Cases

  • Show different themes based on respondent conditions.
  • Personalize the survey experience for different audiences.
  • Apply different branding based on survey responses, metadata, or contact properties.
  • Create multiple theme rules within the same survey.
  • Define a fallback theme when no rule is satisfied.
  • Manage and update existing theme rules from one place.

How to Access Theme Logic

  1. Open your survey in the Builder.
  2. Go to Appearance.
  3. Select Theme Logic.

The Theme Logic section displays the rules configured for the survey. Click Add Rules to create a new theme rule.

Creating Theme Rules

Theme rules determine which theme should be displayed when specific conditions are satisfied.

When creating a rule, you can:

  • Give the rule a name.
  • Select the theme to display.
  • Define the conditions for the rule.
  • Add multiple conditions and groups.
  • Create multiple rules.

Selecting a Theme

The Show this theme dropdown displays available Default Themes and Saved Themes.

A theme that is already assigned to another rule is marked as Used and cannot be selected again.

Defining Conditions

Conditions can be based on supported:

  • Questions
  • Metadata
  • Contact Properties

You can add multiple conditions and groups to create the required logic for the theme rule.

Adding Multiple Theme Rules

You can create multiple theme rules within the Theme Logic configuration. Each rule can have its own name, theme, and conditions.

After configuring the required rules, click Save.

The saved rules will then appear in the Theme Logic section.

Setting the Fallback Theme

You can select a theme to be displayed when none of the configured rules are satisfied.

This theme is shown under the Default Rule section.

Info
The fallback theme is applied only when none of the configured theme rules are satisfied.

Managing Theme Rules

The Manage Rules option allows you to manage all existing rules from one place.

From here, you can:

  • Edit rule names.
  • Modify themes and conditions.
  • Add new rules.
  • Delete individual rules.
  • Change the fallback theme.

Notes
Deleting a theme rule removes only the rule configuration. The associated theme is not deleted.

Theme Usage Status

Themes currently being used in Theme Logic display a Logic Active tag in the Default Themes and Saved Themes sections.

This helps you identify themes that are currently linked to active rules.

Warning
Theme Logic changes will not become active on the live survey until the survey is republished.

Best Practices

  • Give each rule a clear and descriptive name so it is easy to identify later.
  • Use specific conditions to ensure the correct theme is applied to the intended respondents.
  • Keep a fallback theme configured for respondents who do not match any rule.
  • Check the Logic Active tag before deleting or modifying a theme.
  • Review all rules from Manage Rules after making major changes.
  • Always preview and republish the survey after updating Theme Logic.
