SurveySensum gives its users the option to create a multilingual survey. The user can use a single survey to reach out to people who speak different languages or to create a survey in the language their audience is most comfortable with by breaking the language barrier.
The translation is done not only at the level of questions but in everything including the buttons and the custom message.
Why do you need Multilingual Surveys?
You can follow the steps given below to use the Translation feature on SurveySensum -
1. To start adding new languages to your survey you can either choose an existing survey or create a survey from the scratch. Next, choose your Survey language. The default language is English. This is also the language you'll base the other translations on.
2. The next step is to add the questions in your survey.
3. Once you have added the questions, choose the Translations button from the left sidebar. You will be directed to the Translations Page wherein you can choose the languages in which you want to translate your survey in.
4. Under Other Languages click on the button that says Add Language and a list of 54 languages will appear on your screen. You check the languages that you want to translate your survey in. For the purpose of this article, I will be choosing French and Thai.
5. The next step involves Importing Translations from other sources to your survey. For this, you need to select on Download Import Template and the SurveySensum Import Template will get saved on your device. This is the template that you will be using to translate your survey in different languages.
6. Once the template is downloaded, open it on your device. It should have one column for the Id’s, one for the default language, which is English, and the rest of the columns would be for the different languages. You can use your computer’s text editor like Notepad on a PC or TextEdit on a Mac to edit the file. You can also copy paste it on a Google Sheet. The user has to ensure that the text is separated by commas and the translation text should be in inverted commas.
7. To add translations to your file, you can simply copy the column which would have the survey in English language and translate it. Apart from translating the questions, the buttons will also get translated.
Note - If the double quotes are empty, it means that you'll need to provide your own translation for that text in between the double quotes.
8. After you’re done adding the translation of each language, you can save the file.
9. Now, go back to SurveySensum and click on Import Translations. You will be required to upload the edited file.
10. On successfully uploading the file, you will be notified that your translations are complete and they will also be automatically enabled on your survey. You can simply go to your survey by clicking on Editor from the sidebar and check the translated versions.
11. You can now choose the preferred language for your survey from the drop-down menu on the top-right side of the page on the runner and your survey will get completely translated in that language.
Note - If you add a new question or update the survey, you will have to download the Import Template again and redo the translation process.
When you analyze your results, all the responses across languages are merged together as one single data set. Throughout your results, the question text and answer choices will show in the default survey language, but they represent all responses to your survey—regardless of what language the survey taker selected.
